Dixon enrolled in law school because it offered an elective in criminology, a subject he was hesitant to pursue as a full degree. This turned out to be the right call as he has since taken to law like a duck to water and perhaps in a surprising turn of events, discovered his passion for intellectual property (“IP”).
A regular speaker on IP commercialisation and intangible asset management at major international IP events (such as the International IP Symposium and the IP World Summit), Dixon views IP as the celebration of human achievements and he advocates an approach of designing commercial growth strategies centred around these intangible assets so as to help business realise tangible gains.
Such designs cannot be implemented overnight but is something to be cultivated patiently and diligently as part of the business lifecycle. As a former in-house counsel with SEA Group (Garena and Shopee) specialising in IP and commercial dispute resolution before going on to serve as the Deputy Director (IP Strategy) and Head of Legal at IPOS International (a wholly owned subsidiary of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore), he has years of experience helping a variety of business sectors navigate the twists and turns of exploring a viable IP strategy – particularly in the fields of agritech, foodtech, fintech, AI, e-sports, e-commerce and media.
For those who know the man, the only thing he is probably more passionate about than IP is appreciating distilled malt beverages (preferably when complemented with a cigar) in unconventionally moderate amounts. You can usually find him grazing around various popular watering holes in good spirits and company. In his element, he shines as a generous soul – whether he is sharing professional insights, swapping personal anecdotes or simply pouring the next round.
